Meditation

What is Traditional Chinese Meditation?

Meditation is a broad term that encompasses the concept of focusing and calming an individual’s mind, allowing them to find relaxation and peace. For troubled individuals, meditation provides a sense of meaning amidst the busy chaos of everyday life. The process of meditation traces back thousands of years and was performed by various peoples for religious and cultural reasons. Meditation allows for the focus on and discovery of positive emotions, such as patience, love, fulfillment, contentment, relief, and generosity.

Calming the mind and focusing on posture allows people to find a balance between their minds and bodies. The therapeutic process draws energy from sitting, laying, or even walking where a person can ponder their understanding of life and draw on external and internal forces of energy. Meditation is a self-aware method of self-healing the mind, body and spirit to resolve issues and internal struggles.

How to Meditate?

There are multiple ways to meditate, including Tai Chi, Qi Gong and yoga, which improve mental capabilities while emphasizing on balancing life forces. Meditation requires elongated positions, relaxed dispositions and few distractions. An individual striving to meditate needs to eliminate distractions and focus on the present in a quiet environment for a set period of time. A common beginning method to meditation involves counting, inhaling and exhaling motions to the number 10. Meditators either lose count or reach 10, which then requires repetition of the process. Many certified instructors recommend continuing this process, or meditating for 20 minutes daily to ensure a continuous and holistic well-being.

How is Meditation beneficial?

The act of meditation, in whatever preferred form, allows an individual to focus on themselves in a hectic world, even for a few minutes every day. By taking a moment to breathe and still the mind, the benefits of meditation may include:

  • Focusing on the present
  • Gaining perspective on any issues at hand
  • Dealing with the uncontrollable in a calm fashion
  • Alleviating stress

By simply calming the mind, an individual may help to reduce medical conditions that are worsened by the onset of stress, such as:

  • Cancer
  • Anxiety
  • Chronic illnesses
  • Binge eating (or eating disorders)
  • Depression
  • Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia

Consulting a Certified Meditation Instructor and practicing simple techniques daily may greatly increase a person’s health and well-being, creating a more balanced and fulfilling life. For questions and concerns, visit www.drbitayadidi.com for more information.
